Stepping Out Of Your Marketing Comfort Zone

A few weeks ago, ThinkIncircles MD James Whitelock asked me to host a webinar and my gut reaction was to say no. I like to stay behind the scenes but as colleagues, friends, and mentors reminded me ‘life begins outside of your comfort zone Fiona’ so I did it and it was a success, despite getting rudely interrupted 🙂 (see what I mean at minute 4:58)

The comfort zone is defined as a ‘situation in which you feel comfortable and in which your ability and determination are not being tested‘ and that, as any marketing professional knows, is not a place where we want to be.  There is always a new avenue, new tech, a new trend or a new speaking opportunity to be followed and it’s just so easy to say no to things but in doing so, we are in fact sabotaging our own growth.

Here are some compelling reasons to take that leap…

  • Growth and Learning: Embracing challenges exposes you to new skills, knowledge, and experiences. Whether it’s learning a new language, taking up a hobby, or pursuing a different career path, these ventures foster personal growth and development.
  • Increased Confidence: Pushing yourself beyond familiar boundaries boosts self-confidence and self-esteem. As you conquer new challenges, you’ll realise your capabilities are greater than you thought, empowering you to tackle even more ambitious goals.
  • Expanded Horizons: Stepping out of your professional comfort zone exposes you to companies and connections that you may not have previously known. This broadens your network and can support additional business opportunities. Taking risks can lead to significant accomplishments and open doors that were previously unseen.
  • Overcoming Fear: Facing your fears is an essential part of personal growth. By confronting what makes you uncomfortable, you can break free from self-imposed limitations and develop resilience in the face of adversity.

Embracing uncertainty and welcoming the growth that comes with it has helped me to come out of my shell a little bit. In the end,  I found that the sense of accomplishment of leaving my comfort zone far outweighed the initial discomfort and so if anyone wants me to present let me know 🙂

The first step was a 15-minute webinar, the end goal is a TED Talk 🙂

Blond Ambition For More Than a 9 to 5

Recently I had an amazing night out in the West End watching 9to5, the musical theatre production named after the 1980s movie, starring Dolly Parton. As well as the sheer comedy genius, I thoroughly enjoyed the perspective on working life and I started to think about my career journey as a GenX.
